The Aging Process – Genetics play an important part in determining how long you will live, but there are a lot of things you can do to slow the external and internal aging processes. Not only will you look your best as you age, but you will feel your best too.

The aging process works from the inside out, so it is important to understand this when we look at ways to slow down the aging process. There are numerous factors that affect how we look and feel. Although cosmetics can hide the signs of aging, they can never slow it down or fix what is wrong inside our bodies.

Some of the most prominent factors that are detrimental to our bodies and actually accelerate the aging process include:

  • Smoking (Tobacco and Marajuana)
  • Drug Use (including pharmaceuticals)
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption
  • Consuming Sugary Sodas
  • Foods high in Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Sun Overexposure
  • Stress
  • A Poor Diet
  • Lack of Exercise

Probably the most important and also the most neglected resource that we have to slow the aging process is water. Our bodies are composed of more than 70 percent water. Every organ needs water to function properly and be healthy. Our skin is the largest organ and without adequate water will become dry, and our hair and nails will become brittle. Also, the lack of water leads to a build‐up of toxins in our bodies and that can disrupt every process in our body. So, drink plenty of fresh, pure water. Water that’s not chlorinated or Fluoridated.

Grapefruit contains spermidine, which aids cellular growth. Also, citrus fruits contain a tremendous amount of vitamin C, which is vital for collagen production. Collagen is the substance in our skin that allows it to be flexible and strong. Aging causes collagen production to decrease, which in turn causes wrinkles and dry skin – prominent signs of aging.

Red wine contains resveratrol and has been shown to promote the “longevity” gene while also retarding inflammation and diseases related to aging. Or course, excessive consumption can excel the aging process as well as destroy the liver, so remember to limit it to a glass a day.



Catechins and antioxidants in teas block neuronal (nerve) death, and help boost the immune system. Teas, such as green tea, help reduce inflammation which promotes a healthier body. Also, tea is a much healthier alternative to coffee. Coffee contains cadmium which has been shown to cause free radicals that contribute to joint damage.

Soy Milk

For those you can tolerate soy, the phytochemicals in soy products such as tofu, tempeh, and edamame help maintain the elastin and collagen in skin and that helps prevent wrinkles. Also, the isoflavones in soy may protect against skin damage from UV light. If you are soy intolerant, there are plenty of alternatives to this drink, so not to worry!
